In the beginning…

I may be the last person who not only watch the shows on television but the commercials as well. Commercials have a direct agenda to get you to buy the product they sell. Pretty straight forward, right?

When the Mac vs PC series of commercials started, it was not just about a product they were selling. By the clothes the actors wore, they were also attaching a lifestyle to the product: suit + tie = PC whereas jeans + t-shirt = Mac. Same goes for Pepsi = young, Coca-Cola = friendship, community and sharing.

What about other food commercials: why is Tony the tiger playing sports? Why are athletes eating MacDonald? Why is A&W going on and on about hormones and antibiotics and Wendy’s about 100% Fresh Canadian beef? Food commercials always bring thoughts of food and I see them as food for thoughts.

I do not have anything to sell you or to tell you what to do. What’s on the agenda is about getting us, consumers, to have multiple sources to understand what different agenda or audiences the commercials are directed at or implying.

We will try to get short insight full post from questions that pop up in our heads when we watch commercials and hope to turn thoughts of food into food for thoughts. We will also explore possible sources of information that could lead to better if not simply more information. The sources will be in the post but also in our Resource section. We will look at Facebook, Google, Twitter and the web in general for places where information is available and can be accessed.

Please do not take our word for it. Search and seek your own answers from the source and hopefully multiple sources. If we ask a lot of questions, we may not give a lot of answers. At times, you may find that our questions are the answers, just like “To be or not to be” was never really a question but an answer to a choice.

We all have an agenda, what’s on yours?

  1. Commercials seem increasingly to court ethos, as you note–not so much what the product does, how long it lasts, how much/little it costs, how durable it is, and so on, but what kind of a person you are / will be if you own it, or consume it.

  2. After checking out a handful of the blog posts on your web
